• **Young Choreographers Workshop**

Young Choreographers Workshop - Are we over-training our dancers copy skills by rote only or are we also consciously making space for dancers to be practice as dance artists with the agency, power, and knowledge to create their unique movement and choreography? All Joy in Motion classes have always included elements of improvisation games and/or freestyling, but in the Young Choreographers Workshop students will be guided through extended explorations, improvisations, and student dance-making every single class! One week our lessons might culminate in a solo, another week a duet, small group, or class-improvised ensemble piece. If you've taken Contemporary with Ms. Linda and loved the exercises to create your own "dance sentence" out of "roll, wiggle explode, stop"....you'll probably love these classes!

All levels of dance experience are welcome as lessons are presented to allow individual dancers to bring anything and everything they know to their own dance-making.

[Underlying theory] Guided weekly lessons will cover selected Elements of Dance--codified most famously by H'Doubler, Laban and others and often first introduced at college-level dance departments--such as pathway, plane, energy, rhythm, forms and structures. Though individual dance styles such as Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, West Africian, Bollywood, Flamenco, etc call for specialized skills and stylization choices, the underlying elements of dance are found in all dance experiences and a body-understanding of those elements will feed back into a dancer's technique in any dance genre. Find a student-friendly site on the Elements of Dance HERE.

  • What Make a Co-Directorship Work?

    The short answer is BALANCE.

Ms. Linda likes to research, and Justin likes to shmooze. After a long week, Justin unwinds with his group of close friends, and Ms. Linda would rather talk to her journal. Ms. Linda and Justin make a great partnership because they know themselves. They know each other. And they know how to laugh at their quirks. Sure, collaboration is not always cakes and roses, but we know that the hard work we do together behind the scenes makes a better dance experience for you and your family!!

    Did you Know??

    • Justin & Ms. Linda both graduated from Pinole Valley High School.
    • Both are Tauruses.
    • Both have awesome craft supply collections and could get lost in Michael's.
    • Ms. Linda has served on 3 Board of Directors and JiM's Board is Justin's 4th.
    • Ms. Linda's favorite dance company is Alvin Ailey, and Justin's favorite reality TV show is Project Runway.

    **Hip Hop**

Little Tykes Boys – This is a young BOYS ONLY class!  It will build self-expression and boost confidence. Using appropriate current Top 40 music, this class will inspire young dancers. This class is designed to promote self-expression through music, creative movement, dance and even acting exercises. It strengthens a child’s trust in his/her own creative freedom and boosts their confidence.

Boys Hip Hop – Get poppin’, lockin’, glidin’ and freestylin’ in the BOYS ONLY class! There will be floor work, strength training and more. We want to continue breaking the myth that, “dancing is for girls.” Our goal is to build up their confidence, give them the ability to let go and encourage them to be themselves. We want them to show the world what they can do. (Athletic shoes required and knee pads are highly recommended.)

All Other Hip Hop – All classes encourage self-expression and inspire dancers to be themselves in a positive atmosphere while learning awesome dance moves to appropriate current and classic Top 40 music. There will be warm ups, strength training, "across the floor" and choreography. Dancers will be motivated to always do their best which will boost confidence in both dance and life. The more experience will help dictate which level is best for each dancer and even after a few years...the energy is still high, the vibe is still positive, the moves more challenging and the class is even more fun. (Athletic shoes required and knee pads are highly recommended.)

However, class size is limited.

    **COMBO CLASSES**

Tap & Jazz Combo (Wed./Fri. 7–8+ y/o) An upbeat class that builds dancers' foundational skills in both Tap and Jazz dance styles. Dance games and exercises will promote individual self-expression and boost self-confidence. Appropriate for both new dancers and dancers in this age group who may have already been in dance.

Ballet & Tap Combo (Mon. 6–7+ K/1st or Thur. 7–8+ y/o) Pack up your dance bag for this classic combo that mixes ballet and tap with plenty of dance games along the way. Dancers will practice rhythm, grace, shape-making and class etiquette while boosting their confidence and having fun! Older Thursday class will include a very short ballet barre. Appropriate for both new dancers and dancers in this age group who may have already been in dance.

Break into Tap & Jazz (Mon. Beg. 9-11y/o 3rd-6th) Want to start dancing, but don’t want to be put in with the “little” kids? This class is for you! Designed for 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th graders who want to practice the foundational steps of tap and jazz before moving into more in-depth classes that spend one hour on each style. Explanations and exercises will be geared toward the memory and knowledge of students in the middle grade school ages.

    **TAP**

Tap - Beginners will focus on the basics and create a foundation to progress. There will be warm-ups, “across the floor” exercises, and combinations. Please pay attention to the level indicated on the schedule.  Dancers can repeat beginning levels because having a good foundation is very important for progression.  After hard work, repetition, and several consecutive tap classes, dancers will be ready for the next level. As dancers progress they will focus more on choreography, mastering steps, creating new steps with familiar rhythms through improvisation and trickier combinations. Dancers will always continue to work on the basics and progress further with their ability by strengthening their foundation. It's never a bad idea to repeat a level because we will try to work to individual strengths as well.

Tap-Tastic – (✰teacher approval) This class should consist of dancers who have mastered all the tap basics, can do any step on verbal command, and be able to handle some improvisation even if it’s uncomfortable. This class is for the confident who want more difficult combinations, intricate timing, enjoy performing and who simply love tap dancing.

    **BALLET / JAZZ / CONTEMPORARY**

Ballet (Mon. Beg./Cont. 8–9 y/o) Love the way ballet makes you feel beautifully graceful, but don't love that stuffy ballet flavor? This class is for you! Imagination meets training in this class that builds a bridge between combo classes and a traditional ballet class with barre work. You might recognize a few show tunes at the barre! Steps and terminology will be taught at a faster rate to match 2nd-3rd graders, and there will still be time for fun!

Jazz (Thur. Beg./Cont. 8–9+ y/o) High energy fun meet jazz hands as dancers sparkle to upbeat, clean world & pop hits from artists such as Michael & Janet Jackson, Shakira, and Zap Mama. Familiarity with basic steps from jazz, ballet or hip hop including chasses & step pivots recommended, but not required. Dancers will learn classic theatrical jazz steps used in many dance contexts including school musicals.

Jazz (Wed. Cont. 8–10+ y/o) Add some more flair to your basic jazz skills. Students in this class have already mastered steps such as chasses, jazz squares, passé jumps and pas de burres, or are older and willing & able to catch up in a flash. Gain the strength, coordination and concentration needed to begin to pirouette and execute more intricate foot patterns.

Jazz (Wed. Experienced 11+ y/o) This class is for the dancer who can't stop, won't stop, has got to dance! All the spice, sass and pop of jazz meets a more technique-focused class for dancers ready for more.

Contemporary (Mon. Beg./Cont. 8-10 y/o) Charm, presence, force of personality, & strength of character. What is contemporary? A popular form, contemporary mixes the control of ballet with the expressive torso movements of modern dance. Make your presence known while we use floor work, fall & recovery, improvisation & more to build strength in body and character!

Contemporary (Fri. Beg./Cont. 11+ y/o) A first or continuing contemporary class for middle school dancers with some dance experience. Floor work, fall & recovery, partnering, and improvisation will continue with an added emphasis on building strength for turns and greater control.
