    Youth-Teen Classes - Style Descriptions

ALL CLASSES ARE CO-ED with the exception of BOYS ONLY classes designed to continue breaking the myth that, “dancing is for girls.”

WE'VE SIMPLIFIED OUR CLASS NAMES and PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF:

    • NEW = Never taken a JiM HH class? Great place to start!
    • Beg. = Beginning - Beginning classes for grade school ages assume you might just be starting out or you might have had even a few years of age-appropriate classes. There's no rush to be older than your age! Beginning classes for older ages assume many students will be brand new to the style.
    • Cont. = Continuing - Class will move more quickly than a beginners only class.
    • Exp. = Experienced - Label for classes at older ages for students returning to the style after a break or having complementary experience in a related style. Not recommended for beginners.
    • Int. = Intermediate - Assumes a few years of training and some proficiency.
    • Adv. = Advanced - Proficiency in the style required.
    •  (faster-paced, focused, committed - director placement)

Recommendations: This year we anticipate having lots of new students in our programming and it may take a few weeks to ensure everyone is in a great class match. Classes are taught based on recommendations and the approximate age/grade for classes and the below is subjective based on experience, ability, and personality. Please sign up based on the suggested grade, age and experience level you see on the schedule and we will make changes based on our professional opinion. Each class presents a great challenge and learning experience for everyone.  Whether they are a leader, or someone who likes to follow along, we set them up to feel accomplished and will challenge each student individually.

     **Hip Hop**

All classes encourage self-expression and inspire dancers to be themselves in a positive atmosphere while learning awesome dance moves to appropriate current and classic Top 40 music. There will be warm ups, strength training, "across the floor" and choreography. Dancers will be motivated to always do their best which will boost confidence in both dance and life. The more experience will help dictate which level is best for each dancer and even after a few years...the energy is still high, the vibe is still positive, the moves more challenging and the class is even more fun. (Athletic shoes required and knee pads are highly recommended.

Boys Hip Hop – Get poppin’, lockin’, glidin’ and freestylin’ in the BOYS ONLY class! There will be floor work, strength training and more. We want to continue breaking the myth that, “dancing is for girls.” Our goal is to build up their confidence, give them the ability to let go and encourage them to be themselves. We want them to show the world what they can do. (Athletic shoes required and knee pads are highly recommended.)

     **Ballet**

Ballet / Broadway Ballet - Love the way ballet makes you feel beautifully graceful, but don't love that stuffy ballet flavor? This class is for you! Imagination meets training in these classes. The 2nd/3rd grade ballet class builds a bridge between combo classes and a traditional classical ballet class with barre work. Steps and terminology will be taught at a faster rate in the Broadway Ballet Class for 3rd-5th grades to match the developmental age of the dancers and there will still be time for fun. You might recognize a few show tunes at the barre!

Applied Ballet - We all know that classical ballet technique can help you become a better dancer in any style. It's true! While Joy in Motion is not a classical ballet school, we don't want our dancers to miss out on the benefits of authentic ballet technique. Dive into the basics of barre, center floor and traveling combinations and watch your balance, articulation, turns, jumps and core body alignment improve for all styles. Wonder what to wear?  It’s easy: yoga type clothing, soft ballet shoes and long hair secured (for your own protection when pirouetting). For inspiration, watch Lou’s favorite classical dances video with Yo-Yo Ma and Lil' Buck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9jghLeYufQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfEYjKWJ56E

Private Coaching - Sessions personally crafted by Miss Lou, our master ballet instructor with experience applying ballet alignment and technique fundamentals to help you or your child meet their personal movement goals in any style of dance or sport. Rates can be found on our Private Lesson page HERE and lessons may be scheduled through JiM or by talking directly with Miss Lou about your goals. At-home exercises are usually given as "homework" to continue the learning from the coaching sessions.

    **TAP**

Tap - Beginners will focus on the basics and create a foundation to progress. There will be warm-ups, “across the floor” exercises, and combinations. Please pay attention to the level indicated on the schedule.  Dancers can repeat beginning levels because having a good foundation is very important for progression.  After hard work, repetition, and several consecutive tap classes, dancers will be ready for the next level. As dancers progress they will focus more on choreography, mastering steps, creating new steps with familiar rhythms through improvisation and trickier combinations. Dancers will always continue to work on the basics and progress further with their ability by strengthening their foundation. It's never a bad idea to repeat a level because we will try to work to individual strengths as well.

    **Jazz**

Jazz - High energy fun meet jazz hands as dancers sparkle to upbeat, clean world & pop hits from artists such as Michael & Janet Jackson, Shakira, and Zap Mama. Familiarity with basic steps from jazz, ballet or hip hop including chasses & step pivots recommended, but not required. Dancers will learn classic theatrical jazz steps used in many dance contexts including school musicals. As levels progress, add some more flair to your basic jazz skills. Students in these classes have already mastered steps such as chasses, jazz squares, passé jumps and pas de burres, or are older and willing & able to catch up in a flash. Gain the strength, coordination and concentration needed to begin to pirouette and execute more intricate foot patterns and jumps.

    **Contemporary**

Contemporary - Charm, presence, force of personality, & strength of character. What is contemporary? A popular form that often emphasizes emotional story-telling, contemporary mixes the control of ballet with the expressive torso movements of modern dance. Make your presence known while we use floor work, fall & recovery, improvisation & more to build strength in body and character!

    **Modern**

Modern - Modern explores the codified techniques of the American Modern Dance Pioneers: Graham, Limon, Cunningham, Horton, and Dunham.  These techniques are considered classical training, but are different than ballet in that they are done barefooted, include floor work, explore a shifting center of balance, and involve full range of motion of the spine.  Most notably modern dance uses ‘parallel’ positions of the hips, as opposed to the ‘turn out’ used for ballet.

    **Dance for Singers**

Dance for Singers - A class to help singers and musical theater performers feel move comfortable moving on stage and become familiar with basic "classic" stage steps in combination mixed with theatrical exploration and improvisational games.  There will be an emphasis on Jazz and being bigger than life while performing.  You may recognize some Broadway, pop and Hollywood tunes and will have the opportunity to bring your own flavor to each exercise, combination, and piece!
