Join us for a short three-week introduction to Hip Hop and dance basics to feel confident on the dance floor. With a focus on Funk, not breakdancing, we will discuss a bit of history, vocabulary, explore weight distribution and the juxtaposition between sharp and fluid movements, then incorporate it all into choreography to have a short dance routine by the end of Week 3. The main goal is to inspire dancers to be themselves, to let go a little…all while learning awesome dance moves being a part of a community.

TEACHING ARTIST - JUSTIN COLE
Justin grew up in the Bay Area and has never left. He fell into dance by way of theatre and studied several dance genres at Adrienne’s Dance Studio, Katie’s Dance Studio, Contra Costa College, and San Francisco State University. He never really studied Hip Hip, other than at Dance Conventions, before landing his first teaching gig in 1999…which was a Hip Hop class at his primary studio, Katie’s. He learned his funky moves from watching artists like Madonna and Janet Jackson on MTV and by going to the club religiously every weekend when he was 19 to 23 years old.
Justin landed a teaching position at The California of Performing Arts (CAPA) in 2000 and has been involved in the Lamorinda Community every since. His professional teaching career includes 35 consecutive years with the Pinole Community Players, 19 years at Katie’s Dance Studio, 15 years at The California Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA), 8 years with the Peter Pan Foundation and now, nearly 9 years with Joy in Motion.
Justin is extremely committed and proud to have made the decision to co-create a dance community at Joy in Motion for the community to dance and feel much needed joy.
