Making up 36% of our youth and adult offerings, Hip Hop continues to be our most sought after genre of dance at Joy in Motion.
Hip Hop Crews have existed by “director placement” for many years at Joy in Motion. We felt then, and still believe, it’s important to create space for those more committed dancers who choose to make dance a major part of their extracurricular life. We believe in teaching the value of honoring commitments, teamwork, and collaboration. Having experienced significant growth in our most popular genre of dance, we will be holding auditions for dancers to be considered for a “Crew” class this year. In addition, we have done director placements for our two highest non-Crew levels. Non-Crew Hip Hop will remain on the schedule, so there is a place for everyone and the schedule has already been determined. Here are the days and times for both Crews for the 2024-2025 school year, beginning Fall 2024:
Hip Hop Junior Crew (Ages 11+) - Wednesdays 4:25pm - 5:20pm with Justin Cole
Hip Hop Teen Crew (Ages 13+) - Tuesdays 7:30pm - 8:25pm with Taylor Jacobsen-Rios
The following classes are being done by director placement:
Intermediate/Adv. Hip Hop (Ages 13-17) - Thursdays 7:00pm - 7:55pm with Justin Cole
Advanced Hip Hop (Ages 13-17) - Wednesdays 7:35pm - 8:30pm with Taylor Jacobsen-Rios
We encourage those dancers who were placed in one of the above classes to audition for a Crew class whether or not it works for your schedule. If a dancer was placed in Intermediate/Adv. Hip Hop and attends auditions, they will also be considered for Advanced placement. Crew placements will be reviewed at the end of each session. We may or may not choose to add/remove Crew members in the Winter/Spring by previous audition results or by evaluation in a Crew or non-Crew class over the Fall session.
Hip Hop Crew Auditions will be held AFTER registration for Fall 2024 has opened.
During Priority Registration, dancers who were not placed in one of the above classes OR who do not accept their placement will NEED to register for a non-director placement class to ensure they secure a spot in Hip Hop. Please, do not assume you will be selected for a Crew class. If you are unable to enroll in a class, consider getting on as many waitlists as possible. Those classes are:
Continuing/Int. Hip Hop + (Ages 10+) - 2 options
Tuesdays 4:45pm - 5:40pm with Justin Cole
Wednesdays 2:30pm - 3:25pm with Justin Cole
Recommended for those who were previously in Beg./Cont. Hip Hop (Ages 8-11) who meet the age requirement
Intermediate Hip Hop + (Ages 11+) - 3 options
Tuesdays 3:45pm - 4:40pm with Justin Cole
Tuesdays or Wednesdays 6:30pm - 7:25pm with Taylor Jacobsen-Rios
Recommended for those who were previously in Int. Hip Hop (Ages 10+) or (Ages 11+)
Not recommended for those who were previously in Beg./Cont. Hip Hop (Ages 8-11)
Dancers who would like to be considered for a Crew should:
Fill out this Audition Form by 2:00pm Sunday, July 14th - The Deadline has passed.
Be at ONE of the following Auditions:
Thursday, July 18th
5:30pm - 7:00pm for Hip Hop Junior Crew
7:30pm - 9:00pm for Hip Hop Teen Crew
Saturday, July 27th
11:00am - 12:30pm for Hip Hop Junior Crew
1:00pm - 2:30pm for Hip Hop Teen Crew
If you have them, please bring your headshot and resume.
Remember, whether or not you are selected to be in Crew, Joy in Motion fosters a sense of community among our dancers, with an emphasis on acceptance, love, and belonging. Joy in Motion is a safe space to share and give and receive support. Not everyone will make it into a Crew. In fact, most will not. However, we encourage you to take risks, try your best, and come in with a good attitude, on and off the dance floor. Auditioning is a skill that "real world" performing artists need to practice, and Joy in Motion is excited to be able to provide an opportunity for our dancers to gain experience with auditioning.
What if I can’t be at auditions?
If a dancer cannot be at one of the auditions, but would like to be considered for a Crew class, fill out the Audition Form by the deadline and email Joy in Motion. We will see what arrangements can be made. Be sure to enroll during Priority Enrollment for an alternate class as well if you were not already assigned a director placement class.
When will audition results be announced?
We expect to notify families with audition results by Wednesday, August 31st. If a dancer is selected to be in a Crew, we will make the offer. If accepted, we will remove them from any other Hip Hop classes they may be enrolled in. Depending on numbers, we may not be able to allow a Crew member to take a non-Crew class in addition to their Crew class. After August 31st, we may be able to add some dancers from waitlists into the non-Crew classes that will now have some spots made available by those transferred into Crews.
