Making up 36% of our youth and adult offerings, Hip Hop continues to be our most sought after genre of dance at Joy in Motion.
Hip Hop Crews have existed by “director placement” for many years at Joy in Motion. We felt then, and still believe, it’s important to create space for those more committed dancers who choose to make dance a major part of their extracurricular life. We believe in teaching the value of honoring commitments, teamwork, and collaboration. Having experienced significant growth in our most popular genre of dance, we will held auditions for dancers to be considered for a “Crew” class this year. In addition, we assigned director placements for our two highest non-Crew levels. Non-Crew Hip Hop remains on the schedule, so there is a place for everyone.
How did we determine Crews in 2024?
Dancers who wanted to be considered for a Crew were asked to do the following:
Fill out an Audition Form by 2:00pm Sunday, July 14th, 2024.
Be at ONE of the following Auditions:
Thursday, July 18th, 2024
5:30pm - 7:00pm for Hip Hop Junior Crew
7:30pm - 9:00pm for Hip Hop Teen Crew
Saturday, July 27th, 2024
11:00am - 12:30pm for Hip Hop Junior Crew
1:00pm - 2:30pm for Hip Hop Teen Crew
If they had them, they were asked to bring their headshot and resume.
We wanted to be sure they knew, whether or not they were selected to be in Crew, Joy in Motion fosters a sense of community among our dancers, with an emphasis on acceptance, love, and belonging. Joy in Motion is a safe space to share and give and receive support. Not everyone made it into a Crew but we encourage our dancers to take risks, try their best, and come in with a good attitude, on and off the dance floor. Auditioning is a skill that "real world" performing artists need to practice, and Joy in Motion was excited to be able to provide an opportunity for our dancers to gain experience with auditioning.
What if I they couldn’t be at auditions?
If a dancer couldn’t be at one of the auditions, but wanted to be considered for a Crew class, they were asked to fill out the Audition Form by the deadline and email Joy in Motion. We asked dancers to submit a video of themselves performing.
When were audition results announced?
We announced our Crews on July 28th, 2024.
