SUMMER CLASS & CAMP DESCRIPTIONS


 

ALL CLASSES ARE OPEN TO ALL GENDERS.

 

LEVEL NOTES:

  • NEW/Intro= For dancers trying out a new style.

  • Beginning/Continuing - Suitable for new dancers, those with minimal dance experience, and those who may want to really focus on the fundamentals and basic techniques of that genre.

  • Continuing - Class will move more quickly than a beginners only class.

  • Intermediate - Assumes a few years of training and some proficiency.

  • Advanced - Proficiency in the style required.

Recommendations: Classes are taught based on recommendations, the approximate age for classes, and on experience, ability, and personality. Please sign up based on the suggested age and experience level you see on the schedule and we will make changes based on our professional opinion. Each class presents a great challenge and learning experience for everyone. Whether they are a leader, or someone who likes to follow along, we set them up to feel accomplished and will challenge each student individually.


YOUTH CLASSES:

Lil' Funky Freedom & Funky Freedom

This class is designed to promote self-expression through music, creative movement, dance games and acting exercises. It strengthens a child’s trust in his/her own creative freedom and boosts their confidence. Various dance techniques are integrated in age appropriate ways so that children get a well-rounded and truly enjoyable dance experience. 

Ballet

Each class and level will focus on the basics of positions, terminology, and fundamental movements essential for all dance techniques. There will be short anatomy lessons which will help develop skills with the language of dance. There will also be added flair to traditional ballet bringing joy to the rigor. 

Contemporary

This popular dance form often emphasizes emotional story-telling. It mixes the control of ballet with the expressive movements of modern dance and jazz. For both the experienced dancer and “older” beginners wanting to dive into moving from within the body. Experience the popular style from the inside out and while it’s often seen as angsty, this class will explore all emotions including confidence and joy.

Hip Hop

Each class involves a warm-up, copy me section, weekly focus on isolations and various dance vocabulary from the past and present ending with choreography. It will inspire dancers to be themselves receiving positive reinforcement and feeling good vibes while learning awesome dance moves to appropriate current and classic music. It’s appropriate for those who have never danced to those who have been for years.

Jazz 

These classes will explore the techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body. From the streets to Broadway, dancers will find the accents of musical rhythms through their bodies as well as focus on leaps and turns. 

Tap 

Dancers will learn basic tap vocabulary and build upon it with experience. There will always be focus on basic footwork and timing to have, and maintain, a solid rhythmical foundation allowing progression. There will be warm-ups, exercises, combinations based on the level and choreography.


YOUTH CAMPS & INTENSIVES

*FOR ANY 3 HOUR CAMPS OR LONGER - Campers should bring a snack daily.

*FOR THOSE IN BOTH AM & PM DAY CAMPS - Campers should bring a lunch daily and snacks.

THEMED DAY CAMPS

The fun and friendship of summer camp with a break from the sun! This year Joy in Motion has added 5 weeks of Monday through Friday Day Camps for youth ages 5*-11.

Sign up for an AM session from 9:00-12:00, a PM session from 12:30-3:30, or both in the same week to create an all-day camp with no extra charge for the 30 minute supervised lunch break 12:00pm - 12:30pm. 

Each week campers will experience the fun and performing arts through dance, improv, theater games, viewing films of dance in pop culture, with chances to dress up to the theme, and craft along the way.

Themes remain the same for the entire day/week, but activities/crafts will not be repeated in AM & PM sessions so all day campers will have an engaging experience. In all cases, feel free to come dressed daily in your version of the theme and have fun switching it up daily.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

  • *Campers must have completed kindergarten in order to sign up for BOTH (AM and PM) camps in the same week.

  • If you choose to enroll for BOTH AM & PM camps, Lunch Bunch will be included for free. You do NOT need to register for it. If you do register Lunch Bunch, fees will be posted to your account. We will take care of the enrollment from our end and you will not be charged.

  • BOTH AM & PM campers should bring a lunch and snacks daily.

  • Lunch Bunch may be added on to either the AM or PM camp for $40 for the week.

  • $10 lunch drop-ins will be available in case of an emergency, just email us. We will keep track of it!

  • Week 4 - Heroes & Villains Day Camp 

    Be both this week as we save the day and find out it’s kinda fun to act bad.

  • Week 7 - Land of Make Believe Day Camp 

    Calling all pirates, mermaids, fairies, gnomes, and mythical creatures to stories from other lands.

  • Week 8 - Magic & Mystery Day Camp

    Mysterious powers, unite! Be the magic with some famous sorcerers and detectives.


Broadway Bound Dance Camp

This class will focus on acting, creating in-depth characters, improvisation, individuality and dance technique through the art of dance. Classes will include theater games, warm-ups, “across the floor” exercises and participants will learn dance numbers from popular musicals.

CreaARTivity Dance Camp

Each day we will explore a different medium – from collage, drawing and painting – then we will make dances that correlate to the day’s theme. We will perform the dances made after a gallery showing on Thursday. *Art supplies fee included in tuition.

Contemporary Dance Camp

Dancers will explore emotional story-telling mixing the control of ballet with the expressive movements of modern dance and jazz. For both the experienced dancer and “older” beginners wanting to dive into moving from within the body. Experience the popular style from the inside out through partnering, skill drills, and choreography instilling confidence and joy.

Happiest Place on Earth Camp

Let JOY move you through a spirited week of daily games, activities, crafts and a dabble in a few dance styles such as Jazz, Hip Hop, and Musical Theatre. DRESSING UP daily is HIGHLY encouraged. Of course, we want to be sure outfits are suitable for dancing. We do have a changing room if it’s necessary.

Hip Hop Boot Camp

Designed for the more serious Hip Hop dancers who are not afraid of being challenged and want to work hard.

Hip Hop Contemporary Fusion

This camp will inspire dancers to be themselves receiving positive reinforcement and feeling good vibes while learning, and creating their own, awesome dance moves. They will get funky and fluid and mix frivolity with a clear plan of action through emotion. Who knows where that will lead?

Jazz-ma-tazz Dance Camp

Dancers will explore the techniques of modern dance with the current forms of popular dance ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body. From the streets to Broadway, dancers will find the accents of musical rhythms through their bodies as well as focus on skill drills, leaps, and turns all put into choreography.

Leaps, Turns, Lifts & Tricks

This camp will focus on just that. Leaping across the floor, working together on lifts, and exploring tricks will give dancers the opportunity to expand their dance vocabulary and the ability to offer more to any group performance piece.

Spirit Week Dance Camp

Let JOY move you through a spirited week of themed daily games, activities, crafts and a dabble in several dance styles such as Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop. DRESSING UP daily is HIGHLY encouraged. Of course, we want to be sure outfits are suitable for dancing. We do have a changing room if it’s necessary. Ice Cream will be served the final day. Please let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies.

Storybook Ballet Camp

Dancers will be led in bringing a classic fairy tale or storybook to life through creative movement, dance games and acting exercises. It will surely boost confidence and creativity.

ADULT CLASSES:

Adult Cardio Jam

Enjoy exercise and dance the stress away as you follow along to one routine after another. It’s a basic formula where you repeat the same moves throughout the song. The more you do it, the more fun it becomes. It’s definitely a great work out and quite possibly the best hour of the week.

Adult Hip Hop

Get your groove on in this choreography based class. Each week will offer warm-ups, copy me dancing, and new choreography to create a fun routine which will be broken down into sections and taught. Sometimes it’s street inspired, at times more jazz funk, and often super sassy. It’s always fun! 

Adult Jazz

Jazz dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance. Moves ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body with the accents of musical rhythms. Street Jazz, Percussive, Broadway, Contemporary and Lyrical. Jazz classes can be patterned in any of these styles or a combination of them. Emphasis is on the importance of energy, rhythmical accuracy, and style.

Adult Pilates

Let’s take it to the mat! With a focus on strengthening our intrinsic core muscles while we lengthen our limbs, this pilates mat class will have your mind and body working together to create a more flexible, functional, healthier, happier you! All levels welcome. Please bring your own mat.

Adult Yoga

All levels are welcome to this nourishing practice of various Yoga styles where stretches build upon one another after initial postures have been established. Breathing, relaxation, and subtle-body core toning will be coached throughout in order to access the flow state of the body-mind. Each class is based on who walks in the room.
